Meet the ophthalmologists


Dosher has more than 100 physicians and other professional providers on the Medical Staff of the hospital. This is the first in a series on the 20 medical specialties represented at Dosher and it focuses on ophthalmology. This is the branch of medicine concerned with the study and treatment of disorders and diseases of the eye. The five ophthalmologists below are medical doctors who performed 800 procedures for eye patients at Dosher in 2016 and each of them is accepting new patients.

Brian J. Groat, MD

Earned a Doctor of Medicine degree from Tulane University School of Medicine, New Orleans. Dr. Groat served an internship at Charity Hospital, New Orleans, and a medical residency at Medical University of South Carolina, Storm Eye Institute, Charleston. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and joined the Dosher Medical Staff in 2014.

R. Dax Hawkins, MD

Earned a Doctor of Medicine degree from Duke University School of Medicine, Durham. Dr. Hawkins served an internship at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System, S.C., and a medical residency at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and joined the Dosher Medical Staff in 2001.

Kathleen C. Leone, MD

Earned a Doctor of Medicine degree from Georgetown School of Medicine, Washington, D.C. Dr. Leone served an internship and medical residency at National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Md. She is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Leone joined the Dosher Medical Staff in 1998.

Alan E. Oester, Jr., MD

Earned a Doctor of Medicine degree from Medical College of Georgia, Augusta. Dr. Oester served an internship at Indiana University, Bloomington, a medical residency at the Medical College of Georgia, and a fellowship at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He is board certified by the American Academy of Ophthalmology and is a fellow of the American Society of Ophthalmic, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Oester joined the Dosher Medical Staff in 2014.

Matej Polomsky, MD

Earned a Doctor of Medicine degree from New York Medical College, Valhalla, N.Y. Dr. Polomsky served an internship at Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, D.C., a medical residency at University of North Carolina Hospitals, Chapel Hill, and a fellowship at Bayer Laser Center, Boulder, Colo. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and joined the Dosher Medical Staff in 2013.
