Diabetes Education and Medical Nutrition Therapy

Diabetes Education

The Diabetes Self-management Outpatient Program at Dosher Memorial Hospital is designed for pediatric and adult patients with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. The program, nationally recognized by the American Diabetes Association, assists people with diabetes in managing their disease. A physician referral is required for participation in this program. To schedule an appointment or to request more information, call 910-454-4731. Referrals may be faxed to 910-457-3858. Medicare and most insurance plans cover diabetes education when provided by a recognized program like ours.

Our program staff providing education and training includes a registered dietitian, licensed nutritionist and certified diabetes educator, and a board-certified adult nurse practitioner.

The program provides education and training on all aspects of diabetes, including the following:

Diet and nutrition
Exercise and activity
Understanding acute and long-term complications associated with uncontrolled diabetes
Medication and monitoring of blood glucose levels
Individual counseling sessions and group classes are provided

Medical Nutrition Therapy

Good nutrition is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. One step toward achieving healthy eating is education...knowing how to make the right food choices based on your specific needs or medical condition. At Dosher, a registered dietitian/licensed nutritionist and certified diabetes care and education specialist is available to provide one-on-one counseling to patients of all ages with diet or health concerns, including diabetes, heart disease, weight loss, kidney disease and pediatric obesity.

A physician referral is needed for this service. Referrals may be faxed to 910-457-3858. For inquiries regarding the nutrition counseling service, please call 910-454-4731.

Guest Chef Program:

Dosher Memorial Hospital's Guest Chef Program is a free and convenient educational opportunity for anyone in the community interested in cooking healthier variations of popular meals. These live cooking demonstrations are performed by talented local chefs who focus on recreating classic recipes without sacrificing taste.

The program, which went virtual in 2020 for COVID safety purposes, is organized by Vicki Allen, Dosher's Director of Outpatient Diabetes Education and Weight Management. Until we can safely meet again in the hospital conference room, programs will be streamed via Facebook Live. Those interested in attending an upcoming class may call 910-454-4731 for further inquiry.
