Extraordinary Nurse Recognized at Dosher Memorial Hospital

Addison Prevatte, BSN, RN, a nurse in the Dosher Memorial Hospital Patient Care Unit, was recently honored with The DAISY Award® For Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation's programs to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day. Addison was nominated by a patient who commended her for her compassion, responsiveness, and excellent patient care. Said the patient, “Addison is one of the best nurses I ever had. Addison was always cheerful and very helpful. She treated me like a family member, was very knowledgeable, and communicated in terms I could understand. Addison is an understanding nurse and needs to be recognized.”

The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, CA, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.

Said Bonnie Barnes, FAAN, Doctor of Humane Letters (h.c) and Co-Founder of The DAISY Foundation, "When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night. Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human work they do. The kind of work the nurses at Dosher are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award.”

Said Dosher Chief Nursing Officer Jill Ward, DNP, RN, CCRN, “Addison exemplifies what it is to be a great nurse. As a nurse who is newer to the field, she has developed great critical thinking skills and takes patient care very seriously. She takes the time to actively listen to her patients and address any concerns they have, building that nurse-patient relationship that is essential in today’s healthcare environment."

Addison’s is an asset to both her patients and her team, and we are very grateful that she is here at Dosher.”

Addison graduated from the UNCW school of nursing with her Bachelor's in Science and Nursing in December and joined Dosher in February of 2026. Prior to nursing school, Addison worked as a nurse aide, which gave her a significant amount of hands on experience with patients and motivated her to continue her education.

Addison had aspirations of being a nurse from childhood, and can not see herself in any other profession. She finds being able to provide comfort, compassion, and care that helps make a patient’s day just a little better to be incredibly meaningful. Said Addison, “At the end of a shift, seeing the positive impact I have made and knowing that I contributed to a patient’s
experience gives me a great sense of purpose.”

Originally from Leland, Addison now lives in the Winnabow area and enjoys time with her fiancé, family, friends, and two canine fur babies Murphy and Mac. She enjoys time in her garden, fishing, and the beach and loves to work with her hands to bake, sew, or make “just about anything.”
