Extraordinary Nurse Recognized At Dosher Memorial Hospital

Release date: June 23, 2025

Benjamin Rorrer, B.A.ED., RN, a nurse in the Dosher Memorial Hospital Patient Care Unit, was recently honored with The DAISY Award® For Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation's programs to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day. Ben was nominated by the spouse of a patient who had just undergone a total knee replacement and unexpectedly, needed overnight care. The nomination stated, “Ben proved to be a ray of sunshine in our otherwise cloudy day. He smiled his way through the door as he attended to my husband, making him feel comfortable and cared for. We are grateful for his professionalism in administering meds, reviewing future care needs, and his positivity.” When the nominator recalled another recent hospital experience to Ben that did not end well for her, Ben immediately reached out to hug her, providing comfort that she needed in that moment. “He is truly an asset to Dosher’s care,” the nomination went onto say.

The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, CA, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.

Said Bonnie Barnes, FAAN, Doctor of Humane Letters (h.c) and Co-Founder of The DAISY Foundation, "When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night. Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human work they do. The kind of work the nurses at Dosher are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award.”

Said Dosher Chief Nursing Officer Jill Ward, RN, MSN, CCRN, “Ben exemplifies what it is to be a great nurse. In addition to his skill and professionalism, he understands the importance of compassion in nursing. He sees beyond the diagnosis of a patient and validates the experience of that patient and their family, treating everyone with the dignity they deserve. Our great nursing team at Dosher offers this highly worthy candidate our heartfelt congratulations on earning this recognition.”

Said Dosher President and CEO Lynda Stanley, “Ben exemplifies Dosher’s mission of providing comprehensive, compassionate, extraordinary care to every patient every day. Ben is making a difference in the lives of our patients.”

Inspired by the special needs children he taught, Ben transitioned from the field of special needs education to healthcare in 2013. Over the years, Ben has provided bedside care in a variety of hospital settings to both pediatric and adult patients before becoming a case manager. Ben continues to work remotely with pediatric hospitals and case management alongside his bedside role caring for members of the Southport community within Dosher's Patient Care Unit since 2023. Ben says his favorite aspect of nursing is seeing great patient outcomes. "It's truly rewarding when we see our patients feel better and get back to their lives, but it's especially rewarding at Dosher because of the tight-knit community we care for. It feels like we're caring for our own family, and I am so thankful and happy to be a part it."
