Volunteering at Dosher Memorial Hospital

Extraordinary people who care

Dosher Hospital volunteers are a wonderfully diverse group of professionals, retirees, moms, dads and students from Southport and the Southeastern Brunswick County. In choosing to volunteer, they are doing something meaningful with their free time. More importantly, their service and generosity of spirit make a real difference in the lives of patients and their families.

The Flea Market, Gift Shop and annual fundraising efforts of the Dosher Volunteers have resulted in donations of over $2 million to Dosher Hospital. These gifts have purchased much needed equipment and furnishings and funded special hospital projects.

Volunteers support patients, families and staff

Our goal as volunteers is to make the hospital experience as pleasant as possible for patients and their families, and to provide hospital staff with support whenever and wherever possible.

Officers elected for 2024-25 are:

Sherri Parent, President
Dianne Nelson, Vice President
Donna Jenny, Secretary
Lorena Curry, Treasurer
Earlene Campbell, Chaplain

Administrative assistance

There's always a lot of behind-the-scenes action at Dosher Memorial Hospital. Volunteers support clerical needs and lend their support for numerous hospital departments.

Hospitality

A Volunteer's smile is a wonderful greeting to patients, families and visitors when they arrive at the hospital or its satellite facilities. Dosher Hospital Volunteers welcome visitors, answer questions and provide directions at reception areas.

Retail

Over the years, Dosher Hospital Volunteers have operated the hospital's Gift Shop. In addition, the Volunteers organize and sell donated items at the Dosher Hospital Flea Market, located at 129 E. Moore St., in downtown Southport. Proceeds from the Flea Market and Gift Shop are donated to the hospital.

Flea Market hours:

Monday: 1 pm - 4 pm
Tuesday-Friday: 10 am - 4 pm
Saturday: 10 am - 1 pm

Volunteer Opportunities

In addition to working at the Flea Market or Gift Shop, Volunteers may serve by driving the shuttle that transports patients and visitors from parking lots to the hospital entrance and back again; assisting in the emergency department, surgical services, cardiac rehabilitation and physical therapy; greeting and directing visitors at the main desk; answering phones and performing various clerical duties; and other services, based on the hospital’s needs.
